EU what is it?

In Britain and many other European countries the EU is a big deal at the moment, well I guess there has never really been a time when it was not a big deal for many, but given the current situation with more and more countries suffering financial crisis after finacial crisis isn't it time we looked at the whole business in the clear light of cold hard facts.

The problem as I see it is that fundamentally politicians have an aversion to telling the truth, not that all politicians are out and out liars, the problem may be with the workings of the point scoring party political system and the headline hunting media, but nevertheless the situation is that in Britain and probably in other European countries the general public are and have always been, mislead.

The EU is now, has always been and will always be about federalism, the United States of Europe or whatever name they eventually choose to call it. It is not about free trade, that can easily be created. It is not about economics, that is a false construct based on the Seven Deadly Sins. It is not about immigration, that is against the Creed of Peace. It is about a united Europe plane and simple, it is not about loss of statehood it is about becoming a state as opposed to a nation. So let us state that and then we can get on with having an honest discussion about whether it is a good or a bad thing.

To me, in essence it comes down to the bet. We have to decide are we going to take the bet or not, maybe we do not have a choice, we have to bet one way or another. The bet is will it work, will there be a United States of Europe or will it fail. If it fails and we are in it, that will be a bad thing for Britain and any other country that has signed up to it. If it succeeds and we are not in it, that will be a bad thing for Britain and any other European country that opted out.

Is the idea of a United States of Europe a good thing or a bad thing? Personally I feel that if it succeeds then it will be a good thing, if it fails it will be a very bad thing and further more at the moment the odds on it succeeding are very poor. So we can do one of two things, we can get fully behind it and make it work, or we can distance ourselves and hope that it does not work. But one thing we cannot do is sit on the fence, if we are in we have to be wholly committed or we have to come completely out.
