The Economy
That's a boring title I know, who wants to talk about the economy and what has that got to do with spirituality? Well it has a great deal to do with creating a Better World.
The economy is of course everyone's business from your own family budget to world banks and all the institutions in between. The economy is politics it is how we decide when and how to apportion wealth, who gets what. A common eco-political theory is the trickle down effect. This is where if you make those at the top even more wealth there will be more scraps falling of the table for those less well off. This works in one way, that is what trickles down is corruption, dishonesty and greed. It is natural to fall in to the trap of thinking that in this world that is the only way to get on.
Do you run your family budget like that? Not many do, even the most corrupt politician does not run his family like they run the country. You see the economy is actually a study in ethics.
Now I must warn you studying ethics is even more boring than studying politics or economics. So say thank you Keith, because I have done it for you. But you do not need to study ethics because if you have been following what I have said elsewhere you already know about Greed, you know about Universal Consciousness and you know about Universal Love. So you now know that the economic systems used around the world are wrong, unethical, unspiritual and based on the worst of mankind's inner natures.
So how do we fix it? We see the problem for what it is. It is about separateness. Let me ask you a question where is your community? Of course answers are going to vary but unless you said everywhere you answered wrong. I am sure you care for your community and many will be active in their community tirelessly trying to make it a better place to live. Well I am going to tell you that your community is the entire planet and everything in it and on it.
We look at migrants making dangerous sea crossings, many loosing their lives in the process and we want to stop it and we should stop it, on purely practical grounds, we need to stop it. However think of the conditions they are trying to escape from, or find out. Now if someone in your community was living like that, would you not want to alleviate their suffering. But they are not in your community so they are someone else's problem but if you realised that the whole planet is your community then they are your problem.
Now I know that you cannot single handedly end the suffering of the poorest people on the planet. You can do a bit of course by going over to outofempathy.com but more than this you can be vigilant and point out to those in power that we have to expand our sense of community to include all the people of the planet and you will do more good if you include the whole of Nature to. However, be wary of culture corruption. Back in the colonial days many a mistake was made by judging people by our own values and then assigning worth. It is an easy trap to fall in to and is still going on today. But at its heart is the economy, strive for an inclusive and equitable economy every chance you get and you will be doing your bit to building a Better World.
