Hi Theresa |
How does the Tarot work?
My experience.
To begin with let me explain that I have had, over the years, many Tarot readings by different psychics from around the country. It has been my experience that there are good Tarot readers and not so good Tarot readers. Sometimes it is absolutely incredible how the cards tell the story of my life and provide a very clear picture of why I was going through what I was going through, the solutions to my problem and what can be expected as a result. Sometimes, the reading was not so illuminating, the cards seemed to be all wrong, other times, the cards could be understood to align with the situation but the interpretation given by the reader was way off, coloured, I would say by their own personal views of myself. How I asked myself can Tarot be so right and at other times so wrong?
How does the Tarot work?
I have come across several theories. Which broadly fall into two categories, the scientific and the spiritual. Though a study of my other writings will demonstrate that there can be no real difference between the two.
Spiritual theories.
To some, the reading is guided by Beings not of this world, they exist in an alternate reality and wish to guide and assist us to true happiness and harmony. Many names have been put forward for these benevolent beings; Spirit Guides, Angels, Ascended Master, Higher Self, etc. This theory is not without its merits, for many people hold a strong conviction that they have been contacted by these extra dimensional beings, all being in a very subjective way. Just because there is no strong prove for their existence this does not negate their existence. I rather think that this is a larger issue than just related to Tarot cards.
Other people feel that somehow thoughts are transmitted, like radio waves, from client to reader, who tunes into the clients vibrations or frequency. This is an interesting theory and is very close to an Auric explanation of Tarot reading. This explains how readers can understand what is on our minds but says nothing about how the cards can make sense of, describe and offer guidance on a current, past or future situation.
There are those who say that the reader is responding to body language and other, perhaps subliminal cues. This also has merit but does not explain the accuracy of good Tarot readings.
Scientific theories.
Science fans usually cite quantum physics, and the much maligned particle connectivity, or entanglement brought together to Jung's synchronicity. In essence for no other reason than quantum entanglement is a cause without effect while synchronicity is an effect without a cause.
Quantum entanglement is a difficult concept to visualise, and hence large numbers of books have been written about it which has lead to it becoming a route to instant intellectual one-upmanship, it sounds clever but few people really understand the implications of it and if you have no one to argue with you, you can claim anything you like about it. People claim to have solved all the mysteries of the Universe simply by reference to a mystery of science.
Synchronicity, on the other hand is easy to visualise because we all experience in our everyday lives, basically things happen together. This theory is very evidently related to cards falling in relationship to the client's issues. But because synchronicity is an effect without a cause it too must fail as an explanation of how Tarot works.
A synthesis.
I feel that a clearer understanding can come from a general understanding of the nature of the Field.
The Field as popularised by Lynne MacTaggat proposes the existence of a field which permeates through the whole of space and matter. With this field it is said that we are all connected, not only with each other but with everything, now everything is a very big big word.
When we consider the actual structure of matter and energy which are really the same thing, that is waves, or vibrations. Remember that light used to be thought of as both a wave and a particle, now it is known that it is actually just packets of waves. Well it turns out that matter can also be thought of as a wave/particle. With this in mind and the fact that everything in between {the field) is also made of the same stuff we can see that we are all just packets of energy in a sea of energy. Packets of waves are in essence parcels of information.
Being connected is one thing but making use of that connection is something else entirely. How can we tune into this field and hence everything else? Well, the answer as usual resides in the question, it is a matter of tuning in, the same as you tune into a radio station.
It would be nice if we could just tweak a little dial on our forehead and tune into any packet of information we wished to. However, imagine trying to tune to one of billions and billions of stations. There is though another way.
It is my theory that we are able to scan a multitude of information channels, but because we can only be conscious of a few things at once, most of that information is filtered out. Consider, a large gathering of people everybody talking at once, all we hear is a background hum, until someone mentions your name and this you hear clearly because something inside you has been scanning these conversations and has notified you when it picked up something which maybe important to you.
You can call this something inside of you, intuition, or sixth sense or any other name tag you care for. The trouble is though that, as in the case above, it may have been your name but was not referring to you, the intuition is very powerful but it is not always too smart.
You can train your intuition though and this is where we can get back to the Tarot. Just making it known what you wish to be made away of will train your intuition to a much more useful tool. It is along these lines which lie the truth of how the Tarot works. This will be discuss later.

Thank you Theresa, I knew all that you said but could not bring myself to act, I have now acted on what you reminded me about and wow has my life turned around, coming to you for a reading was the best thing to happen to me in a long while.
